Embracing Our Roots: Family History, DNA, and the Power of Traditions

Good morning, everybody! I hope you’re all having a great week so far. Today, I want to dive into a topic that’s close to my heart – family history, our DNA, and the significance of preserving our ancestral traditions.

I firmly believe that, in some way, we are all connected. If we trace our lineage back to Adam and Eve, we are part of one enormous family tree. However, what I’d like to emphasize today is the importance of understanding our family history and passing down cherished traditions.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the customs and practices that have shaped our families for generations. It could be a beloved family recipe, a particular craft, a unique style of music or dance. These are the threads that weave together the fabric of our heritage, and they deserve to be preserved.

For those like my maternal grandmother, who was adopted, the journey to uncovering one’s family history can be an arduous one. I’ve spent over two decades trying to uncover her roots, searching for clues about her biological parents. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, from frustration to moments of sheer joy. But my goal remains the same – to solve the mystery of her past. I know her family goes back to Switzerland.

I’ve often wondered why my grandmother chose not to discuss her adoption information to us. I mean we knew she was adopted but she refused to talk about her parents. Did it bring up painful memories, or was she too young to remember the circumstances that led her to an orphanage in early 1900s in Cleveland? Sadly, she took those secrets with her when she passed away. I respect her silence but long to uncover the story of her origins.

I’ve reached out to institutions like BeechBrook, which now holds records of the old Cleveland Protestant Orphanage Asylum. Without knowledge of her birth name, I’ve hit a roadblock in obtaining her adoption records. The journey continues, but the mystery remains unsolved. I find many courts (probate) don’t like to reveal information, but let’s be real my grandmother was born in 1902 passed in 1996. I’m sure someone could help me.

Despite this challenge, I’ve found solace and purpose in reconnecting with my dads Croatian heritage.

My dads family hails from Croatia, the former Yugoslavia, and I recall the music that filled our kitchen on Sundays when I was a child. Back then, it was an annoyance, but today, I blast that same music with pride. I’ve learned treasured recipes and started writing a book to ensure future generations can savor our culinary heritage. I’ve even reconnected with family in Croatia, uncovering a fascinating Croatian background.

I want to stress the importance of family traditions and discovering our heritage. We need to take time today to talk to our parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts cousins.

We must learn about our ancestors’ struggles and triumphs to truly appreciate who we are today. Our roots are our foundation, and by embracing them, we find a profound sense of belonging and pride.

I’d like to leave you with a positive quote on family and tradition: “In every conceivable manner, the family is a link to our past, bridge to our future.” – Alex Haley

And a Bible verse on family: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” – Exodus 20:12

I hope you all have a blessed day, and I look forward to sharing more about my Croatian heritage in a future post. Until then, cherish your family traditions and the stories that connect us through time.

Trusting God (poem)

In faith’s embrace, we find our way,
A guiding light in night and day.
Belief in God, a radiant star,
Life-changing, no matter where we are.

In every whisper of the breeze,
In sunsets painting distant seas,
In every moment, great or small,
God’s presence shines, embracing all.

Through trials dark and skies so gray,
In times of joy and when we pray,
Our faith in Him, a constant guide,
In every storm, He stands beside.

In trusting God, our hearts take flight,
He turns our darkness into light.
Life’s journey, with Him, is sublime,
For God is with us, for all of time.

So let us cherish this sacred bond,
In God’s love, we are ever fond.
Believing in Him, our souls set free,
For God’s unwavering love, we’ll always see.

Alone with God: Finding Solitude in the Presence of the Divine

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant presence of others. We attend meetings, social gatherings, and church services, all while surrounded by people. However, there is a profound lesson to be learned from a moment in the life of Jesus when He intentionally sought solitude on a mountainside with His disciples.

The passage in John 6:3 tells us that “Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.” It’s important to note that just before this moment, Jesus had withdrawn from the pressing crowds who were pursuing Him. He deliberately chose solitude, and there’s a significant reason for this choice.

There are certain lessons, revelations, and experiences that we can only encounter when we are alone with God. While the fellowship of the church is invaluable, and we can certainly learn and grow in the presence of other believers, there exists a unique depth of spiritual intimacy that can only be found in solitude with the Divine.

In our world filled with constant activity and noise, it’s become increasingly rare for individuals to carve out moments of stillness and silence. Yet, these moments of aloneness with God are vital for our spiritual growth and preparation for the tasks ahead.

A.W. Tozer, in his book “Faith Beyond Reason,” beautifully expresses the concept of spiritual preparation through solitude. He highlights the importance of coming before God in silence and quietness, waiting until we are charged with His Spirit. It’s in these moments of divine encounter that we are tuned like a violin, recharged like a battery, and poised to carry out our activities with purpose and power.

Much like Jesus on that mountainside, when we prioritize alone time with God, we become vessels ready to receive His guidance, strength, and wisdom. We step into the flow of divine life, allowing it to permeate our souls and equip us for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

So, as you navigate the bustling world around you, remember the profound significance of carving out moments of solitude with God. It is in these quiet, sacred spaces that you can be filled, renewed, and prepared to make a meaningful impact on the world around you. Take a step back from the noise, find a moment of solitude, and allow God to speak to your heart.

The Power of Words in Our Christian Walk

In the tapestry of our lives, the words we speak are like the threads that weave our story. They hold the power to shape our thoughts, emotions, and actions. As Christians, our words hold an even deeper significance, as they are intertwined with our faith journey. In this blog post, we will explore how our speech affects our Christian walk and how we can harness the power of positive words to align with God’s plan for our lives.

The Influence of Our Words:
The Bible reminds us of the immense influence our words have on our lives. Proverbs 18:21 (NIV) tells us, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Our words can either breathe life into our circumstances or cast a shadow of negativity. Speaking negatively can lead to disappointment and despair, while speaking positively can usher in hope and joy.

Declaration of Faith:
As believers, it is crucial to declare our faith through the words we speak. Let us take a moment to make this powerful declaration a part of our daily lives:

“Let God be my vindicator. God’s dream for my life is unstoppable, not hindered by disappointments or adversities. God has solutions ready for every problem I face. I trust in His perfect timing, knowing that everything will work together for good. The right people and opportunities are coming my way. I am surrounded by God’s favor and secure in His promises, safe in His love. I am fulfilling my destiny, letting go of all past hurts and forgiving those who have hurt me. With God by my side, I am wiser and stronger.”

Bible Verses for Encouragement:

  1. Romans 8:28 (NIV): “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This verse reminds us that God is at work in all circumstances, turning them for our good.
  2. Proverbs 4:23 (NIV): “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This verse underscores the importance of guarding our hearts and speaking in alignment with God’s Word.

Quote of the Day:
“Words are free. It’s how you use them that may cost you.” — Unknown

In our Christian walk, the words we speak are not mere expressions but powerful tools that can shape our reality. By embracing positivity, faith, and forgiveness in our speech, we align ourselves with God’s plan for our lives. Let us remember the declaration of faith and the wisdom of the Bible verses as we journey toward a life filled with hope, purpose, and the abundant blessings of our heavenly Father.

Downsizing: A Journey of Letting Go and Finding Freedom

Downsizing: A Journey of Letting Go and Finding Freedom

As I sit here amidst the boxes and memories, preparing for a new chapter in my life, I can’t help but reflect on the true meaning of downsizing. It goes far beyond just getting rid of things; it’s about passing on cherished possessions to loved ones or helping those in need during times of transition. Downsizing is an opportunity for growth, both personally and spiritually.

In my hands, I hold a silverware set that has been passed down . It was once my aunt’s, then my mother’s, then mine and now it’s my turn to decide who will carry on its legacy. I realize that downsizing is not about discarding our past, but rather about sharing our history with those we love. And also helping strangers in need as well.

So, what in your life are you ready to downsize? Is it personal belongings that no longer serve you? Is it the collection of hobbies and interests that have faded into the background of your life? Or perhaps it’s the mountain of paperwork that has accumulated over the years, burdening your space and mind?

There are certain items, like old family photos, that we should never part with. But do we really need receipts from purchases made decades ago? Or the keys to our first car, long since recycled? It’s time to let go of the unnecessary clutter that weighs us down, while still cherishing the memories they represent.

The process of downsizing has not come without its challenges. My husband and I have found ourselves clinging onto things because of sentimental attachments and the fear of letting go. We believed that these possessions somehow defined us or held the key to our past. However, as we embark on this new adventure, we’ve come to realize that these material possessions do not define us; they are simply reminders of chapters already written.

Our upcoming move to a different state, prompted by the desire to be closer to family, has brought about a newfound clarity. We are excited about the journey ahead, knowing that it will be lighter and less encumbered by the weight of things. Going through our belongings and downsizing has been liberating. I still think some things we could downsize more , but we have done a lot and It has allowed us to release emotions and lighten our spirits.

As I stumbled upon a box of papers that had remained untouched since the year 2000, I saw my mother’s reflection in my actions. She too held onto things, leaving behind a task for me huge and physical and emotional demanding task after she passed away. But now, I am determined to break this cycle. I no longer fear letting go. And Downsizing has become an opportunity to declutter not only our house but also our lives. I am not carrying 261 books with me. So I am keeping ones that I really want or haven’t read yet.

The process of shedding unnecessary excess has opened our eyes to the freedom that comes with living a simpler life. We no longer need to carry the burden of old papers or dozens of outdated magazines. Instead, we can focus on what truly matters – the experiences and relationships that shape us.

Downsizing is not just about physical possessions; it is also about decluttering our minds. By letting go of the unnecessary, we create space for new experiences, ideas, and growth. As I embark on this journey, I find solace in scripture, which reminds me to release stress and anxiety:

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7.

And as we clear our minds of clutter, I leave you with this quote of the day:

“Clutter is not just physical stuff. It’s old ideas, toxic relationships, and bad habits. Clutter is anything that does not support your better self.” – Eleanor Brownn.

May this journey of downsizing bring you peace, clarity, and the freedom to embrace the joy of a simplified life.

Finding Faith in Life’s Ups and Downs: God’s Ever-Present Guidance

Life is a journey filled with peaks and valleys, where joy and sorrow intermingle, and we encounter the unexpected at every turn. In the midst of this unpredictable journey, it’s comforting to believe that there is a guiding presence, a force that knows our future even before we do. For many, that guiding force is God, a source of unwavering faith and strength.

The Inevitable Roller Coaster of Life

Life is a kaleidoscope of experiences. At times, we bask in the warm glow of success and love, feeling on top of the world. Other times, we navigate the treacherous terrain of health issues, grief, or abuse, leaving us feeling lost and broken. Yet, amidst this whirlwind of emotions, one constant remains – our faith in God.

Trusting in Divine Providence

No matter the circumstances we face, the belief that God is always with us provides a profound sense of comfort. It’s a belief deeply rooted in trust, an unwavering conviction that there is a plan for us, even when we can’t see it. This trust allows us to face adversity with resilience and to savor moments of joy with gratitude, knowing that all experiences, whether good or bad, shape our journey.

The Divine Perspective

From a divine perspective, every trial we encounter is an opportunity for growth, every loss a chance for spiritual awakening. In the depths of grief or the throes of pain, we may question why a loving God would allow such suffering. But it’s in these moments that our faith is truly tested. It’s when we cling to our belief in God’s presence that we find the strength to endure, the courage to heal, and the capacity to forgive.

God’s Role in Our Success

On the flip side, when we taste success and happiness, it’s easy to forget our dependence on a higher power. We may become complacent, attributing our achievements solely to our efforts. Yet, it’s in these moments of triumph that acknowledging God’s role becomes even more important. Recognizing that our successes are not solely the result of our abilities but also the divine guidance we receive keeps us humble and grateful.

Love as the Ultimate Expression

In the tapestry of life, love is perhaps the most potent thread. It binds us to one another and connects us to the divine. It’s through love that we often experience God’s presence most profoundly. Whether it’s the love of a friend, the love of family, or the love of a romantic partner, it’s a reminder of the love God has for us.

Embracing the Journey

In conclusion, life’s journey is a complex tapestry of experiences, from the highest peaks to the lowest valleys. Throughout it all, our faith in God provides the thread that weaves these moments together. It’s a belief that God is with us every step of the way, guiding us through life’s twists and turns, and revealing the beauty in both our

Hidden Treasures of Psalm 23

Psalm 23 is a cherished passage in the Bible that has provided comfort and solace to countless individuals throughout history. While it may be a familiar verse to many, the depths of its wisdom and the hidden treasures it holds are worth exploring. In this blog post, we will embark on a journey to uncover the profound insights and valuable lessons concealed within the verses of Psalm 23.

Verse 1: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

At first glance, this verse may seem simple, but it contains a profound truth. By declaring that the Lord is our shepherd, we acknowledge His care and guidance in our lives. The assurance that we “shall not want” reminds us of God’s provision and His commitment to meet our needs. This verse teaches us to trust in His abundant provision and unfailing care.

Verse 2: “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.”

In these words, we find a picture of God’s restorative power. The “green pastures” symbolize nourishment and spiritual refreshment, while the “still waters” represent tranquility and peace. This verse reminds us that God not only provides for our physical needs but also offers rest and renewal for our souls. It encourages us to find moments of quiet reflection and spiritual nourishment in our daily lives.

Verse 3: “He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

This verse highlights the transformative work of God in our lives. “Restoring our soul” indicates His ability to heal and revive our innermost being. As our Shepherd, He guides us along paths of righteousness, teaching us to live in a manner that honors Him. This verse emphasizes the importance of living in accordance with God’s will and for His glory.

Verse 4: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Here, we confront the inevitability of life’s challenges and trials. The “valley of the shadow of death” represents our darkest moments, but the assurance of God’s presence offers unwavering comfort. His “rod and staff” signify His protective care and guidance. This verse encourages us to face adversity with courage and faith, knowing that God is our constant companion.

Verse 5: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

This verse paints a vivid picture of God’s lavish blessings. Even in the midst of challenges and opposition, He provides abundance and honor. The “table” symbolizes His provision, and the “anointing with oil” represents His favor and consecration. Our cup “overflows” with His goodness, reminding us of His boundless blessings.

Verse 6: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

In the closing verse, we find the promise of God’s enduring faithfulness. “Goodness and mercy” are our constant companions, accompanying us throughout our life’s journey. The assurance of dwelling in the house of the Lord forever reminds us of the eternal hope we have in Him.

Psalm 23 is a treasure trove of spiritual wisdom and comfort. Each verse unveils a unique facet of God’s character and His loving care for us. As we meditate on these hidden treasures, may we find renewed faith, strength, and hope in our walk with the Good Shepherd.

Nurturing Childlike Faith: Teaching Children about the Unseen God

Nurturing Childlike Faith: Teaching Children about the Unseen God

In a world driven by skepticism and empirical evidence, discussing the concept of an unseen God with children can be a delicate task. However, it is often children who demonstrate an unwavering belief in the divine, which can serve as an inspiring example for adults. This article delves into the art of talking to children about a God we cannot see but know is there. It explores how children’s innate faith and sense of wonder can offer valuable insights into our own understanding of spirituality.

Childlike Faith: A Source of Wisdom:
As we grow older, our faith tends to waver due to external influences, experiences, and doubts. Children, on the other hand, exhibit a remarkable ability to wholeheartedly believe in a higher power. Their unshakable faith at a young age often serves as a reminder that perhaps our journey towards God should be guided by their pure, untainted perceptions.

Learning from Children:
The Bible encourages us to view God through the lens of a child’s perspective. This notion suggests that our quest to understand God should not necessarily revolve around imparting theological complexities, but rather learning from the simple yet profound faith children possess. In Luke 18:17, Jesus states that embracing the kingdom of God with childlike innocence is crucial. This implies that knowing God isn’t about scholarly knowledge but rather a matter of genuine trust.

Nurturing Wonder and Confidence:
To help children grasp the concept of an unseen God, fostering their inherent sense of wonder is key. Encouraging their confidence by reminding them of an ever-present Heavenly Father who loves and cares for them can lay the foundation for a deepening spiritual connection. Engaging children in conversations about the vastness of the universe or the beauty of nature can inspire contemplation about the divine creator.

Using Everyday Experiences:
Everyday experiences, such as gazing at the stars or seeking comfort during a thunderstorm, can become powerful opportunities to discuss God’s presence. By relating these occurrences to the idea of God’s protective embrace, children can develop a sense of security rooted in faith. The natural inclination of children to accept such notions can be harnessed to encourage their spiritual growth.

Introducing Jesus: The Incarnate Revelation:
While children possess an innate sense of God’s reality, the Bible emphasizes that a clear understanding of God comes through Jesus Christ. In John 1:18 and John 14:9, the concept that knowing God is inseparable from knowing Jesus is underscored. Introducing children to the stories of Jesus, His miracles, and His love for little ones can provide a tangible foundation for their understanding of God’s character.

Exploring Christ’s Story with Children:
One effective way to introduce children to Jesus is through engaging Children’s Bibles. By narrating the stories of Christ’s miracles and interactions, children can begin to comprehend the essence of His teachings. Sharing accounts of turning water into wine, healing the blind, and embracing children on His lap allows children to connect with Jesus on a personal level.

Cultivating Love and Understanding:
Teaching children about Jesus doesn’t just enhance their knowledge of God; it also fosters a genuine love for Him. As children come to appreciate Jesus’ compassion, kindness, and sacrifice, they naturally develop a deeper emotional connection. This process not only shapes their faith but can also invigorate the spiritual journey of parents and caregivers.

Talking to children about an unseen God is a transformative journey that transcends age boundaries. By observing and learning from children’s unwavering faith and innate wonder, adults can find new ways to embrace their spirituality. Introducing children to Jesus and His teachings creates a bridge between their childlike faith and the complexities of adult understanding. Ultimately, engaging in these conversations not only nurtures a child’s connection with God but enriches the spiritual lives of parents and mentors in unexpected and profound ways.

What Secrets from Psalm 46 Can Help Me Embrace God’s Nearness in Times of Trouble?

When prayer seems unanswered, we may wonder if God knows what is happening in our hurt or troubles. How do we know God is close to us through the desperate days? What does this Psalm assure for the child of God?

Just before Jesus ascended to heaven, He promised the disciples, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). He prefaced that declaration by saying, “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to Me” (Matthew 28:18).

With His nearness, we rest in His power and authority over everything we face, and in troubled times, His peace comes like a river that washes over us.
The Secret Place of His Presence
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).
We find God’s embrace through His presence. I can’t be in the bedroom when I’m in the kitchen, but this chapter reminds us that God is omnipresent, everywhere, present with His whole being, unlimited by time or space. Ever-present God is with us, always!

One of life’s greatest pleasures is recognizing His presence. As the words of this chorus say, “Shut in with God in the secret place, there in His presence beholding His face. Gaining new power to run in the race, I long to be shut in with God.”
Whether through times of worship, reading His Word, hearing a sermon or testimony that moves us, or sitting at the piano praising the Lord, His presence ushers us to a “secret place” where He is near.
Troubles begin to vanish in that secret place, and God looms larger and troubles smaller. A line from the song Sitting at the Feet of Jesus says, “Where can mortals be more blessed?” Indeed.
The “ever-present” God is constantly and consistently with us. David experienced that truth. “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there” (Psalm 139:7-8).

Being in the storms of life — losing a loved one, going through a divorce, money worries, or fear over the world’s chaos — may seem insurmountable, like mountains crashing into the sea. But even in the worst days of life, God says, “Don’t be afraid; I am with you.”

Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging (Psalm 46:2-3).
The secret place of God’s presence gives us the strength to face the day, accompanied by His unrivaled authority over every situation we face.
The Secret Power of His Authority
“All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18).

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before you in humility and reverence, acknowledging that you are the Almighty, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. In times of uncertainty, when the storms of life rage around us, help us remember that you are in control.

We surrender our fears, worries, and doubts into your loving hands, knowing that your wisdom surpasses our understanding. You see the bigger picture, and nothing takes you by surprise. We find comfort in the knowledge that you are always with us, guiding our steps and working all things for our good.

Grant us the strength to trust in your divine plan, even when we cannot see the way forward. Help us embrace your sovereignty with unwavering faith, knowing that your love and grace are constant, regardless of the circumstances we face.

May this prayer serve as a reminder to all that no matter what challenges arise, you are in control. Your purposes will prevail, and your unfailing love will sustain us. In this trust, we find peace and hope.

We offer this prayer in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Amen.
